Salary sacrificing and computers - some advice
Some members have asked if they can Salary Sacrifice to buy a laptop computer. The problem really is that even if a person Salary Sacrifices say $20 per week for 3 years to purchase a laptop computer (so a total of $3000) this investment will have very little value due to obsolescence, even if it has been paid off under the leasing or purchasing arrangement. The net amount you paid would be $2055 due to less tax being paid on your total income.
If instead one Salary Sacrifices $20 a week for three years into their superannuation a total of $3000, the investment would be worth $2830 at the end of the three years. This is so because one would have paid a tax input amount of 15% and working on a 7% crediting rate. After five years that will have grown to $3240 due to compounding of the amount invested.
Anyone working in a Tasmanian school that is required to use a computer for work purposes, should be provided with a laptop or desktop computer. If your employer requires you to use a computer for such tasks as classroom presentations, recording student assessments and writing reports then the employer should provide this essential tool.
It should also be noted that if you purchase a computer and use it for work purposes then you can claim a deduction proportionate to your use for private and work purposes.
So it is your decision to use Salary Sacrifice anyway you can, however the above information may be of use to members. Please contact the TCEEA if you need more information or would like to discuss this in more detail.
