20% pay increase for practice teaching supervision
Teachers in Government and non-Government schools supervising practice teachers will have their supervision rates increased by 20% as a result of a settlement reached between the University of Tasmania, the Australian Education Union and the Independent Education Union.
In announcing the deal yesterday, new UTAS Dean of Education Professor Ian Hay said that he was pleased that the pay dispute has been resolved without further disruption to UTAS student teachers undertaking professional experience as part of their UTAS degree requirements. "The settlement reached with the unions reflects a new level of co-operation between the parties aimed at ensuring that our students are not disadvantaged by the pay issue. The dispute over supervision rates is an Australia-wide issue, with the UTAS rates now being the highest in the country."
AEU State President Leanne Wright and IEU State Secretary Angela Briant said that the unions will now be asking their members to do what they can to ensure the success of the UTAS practicum program. "This is a first major step in tackling the supervision payment issue, which is an issue right across the country, and which stems from significant under-funding of practice teaching supervision by the Commonwealth Government."
The 20% pay increase will apply from 1 July this year. In addition, the number of payment-free days will be more than halved next year and will be abolished altogether from the start of 2010.
