TCEEA policy and practice on advice to members june, 2006

"TCEEA members contact their union on a regular basis for information, advice and support. This may be by phone, fax, email or in person. Frequently non-members also contact us and in these situations we are prepared to give our time for one conversation, communication or meeting with that person.
Contact with the union gives employees a chance to ask for information or clarification about workplace and industrial issues to do with the Award, Salary Agreement, general employment law and workplace health and safety OR discuss professional issues such as assessment and reporting, mentoring programs or TQA requirements for year 11 and 12 moderation. Often all the member requires is a simple clarification or the opportunity to talk about an issue that may be worrying him or her.
The bulk of the TCEEA advice and information that is provided does not lead to further action by the member in the workplace as the enquiry has resolved the matter.
The TCEEA has a vital role in advising and supporting members. The union's mission can only assist in achieving harmony within the school environment. The important role unions have in this regard has been confirmed and recognised by papal encyclicals.
It is not the desire of the TCEEA to in any way take over a Principal's role in advising, supporting and interacting with his or her staff.
Often our first response to a member query is to ask if the member has raised the matter at the school level. Following the provision of information or advice members are strongly encouraged to raise the matter directly with school management so that it can be progressed and any misunderstandings can be resolved.
Our absolute commitment to our members is that all enquiries are treated as private and confidential.
On some occasions when the union has a number of queries on the same matter we feel it is beneficial to have an informal meeting with staff to canvas their views, explore the issues and find the most appropriate way to move forward to deliver positive outcomes for the school and our members.
I hope that the above information clarifies our position and I again confirm our desire to closely liaise with school management in an open and mutually respectful manner. The TCEEA appreciates the complex and at times difficult role Principals are required to carry out and the union always looks to have good working relationships in order to advance catholic education in the state.
Please do not hesitate to contact me in regard to this communication or at any time in the future."
